The Cornish Writer

Taran Spalding-Jenkin: Spoken word poet & storyteller.

Who am I?

The Cornish Writer is Taran Spalding-Jenkin, a spoken word poet and storyteller from Cornwall, currently based in Bristol. His work deals with his relationship with his native land and childhood, drawing on the rich culture of myths, legends and language that dwell there.

Taran graduated from Aberystwyth University in 2014 with a degree in Drama & Performance Studies where he rediscovered his love of writing - plays, poetry, short stories - and performing them in front of whoever would listen.

He burst onto the Bristol scene by winning Milk Poetry's slam in July 2018, the first slam he had ever competed in, and is now 1/3 of Tonic, Bristol’s music and poetry party.

The Cornish Writer mixes the meat and veg of traditional Cornish folk tales and the salt and pepper of life as a modern Cornishman with all the good and bad that comes with it. All wrapped up in the expertly crimped pastry of a professional performance to capture any audience.

When next I come to this land
I hope to find that glowing brand
To catch the tinder of my soul
And bring to flame my heart of coal
That day again I’ll call you home
Long from now, in time to come
After years of travel through unknown
Its there I’ll rest my homesick bones.
